What are the causes of preeclampsia?

Several factors play roles in causing preeclampsia.

Early in pregnancy, new blood vessels develop and evolve to efficiently send blood to the placenta. These blood vessels don’t seem to develop or function properly in women with preeclampsia.

The following are some causes leading to the abnormal development of the blood vessels:

  • Insufficient blood flow to the uterus
  • Damage to the blood vessels
  • A problem with the immune system
  • Certain genes
