What Are the Causes of Rheumatic Fever?

Q:

Why do many children in the developing world still have RHD? What are the causes of rheumatic fever?

A:

Rheumatic fever is caused by group A streptococcus infection which was not treated inadequately and properly. Scarlet fever which only occurs in a small number of people and strep throat are two major symptoms caused by this bacterium. Rheumatic fever is an inflammatory disorder.

If infected with the bacteria that leads to strep throat, the body will attack its own tissues. Inflammation will then be triggered throughout the body and is the basic reaction of all the symptoms of rheumatic fever.
