What Are the Differences between HER2-positive and -negative Breast Cancers?

Q:

What are the differences between HER2-positive and -negative breast cancers?

A:

Compared with HER2-positive breast cancers, HER2-negative breast have little or no HER2 protein and contain higher levels of estrogen and progesterone receptors. However, these two types of breast cancers should be treated with different medications. Therapies targeted HER2-positive breast cancers, such as trastuzumab, are not used to treat HER2-negative breast cancers. Generally, the risks outweigh the benefits.

However, HER2-positive and HER2-negative breast cancers are not separated totally. Some HER2-positive breast cancers can become HER2-negative breast cancers over time and vice versa.
