What Are the Pictures of Barrett's Esophagus?

Q:
What Are the Pictures of Barrett’s Esophagus?

A:
In Barrett’s esophagus, the tissue appears red and velvety, while the normal esophagus tissue appears pale and glossy (see picture below).

The exact cause of Barrett’s esophagus is unkown. However, most people with Barrett’s esophagus have a long-standing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In GERD, stomach acid washes back into the esophagus, damaging esophagus tissue (see picture below).

The most common symptom of GERD is heartburn or acid reflux. But some people diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus have never had the symptom. So it is not clear what causes Barrett’s esophagus in these people.
