Inflamed esophagus, also called esophagitis, is a condition when the lining of the esophagus becomes swollen, inflamed, or irritated. The esophagus, also known as food pipe, is the tube that leads from the back of the mouth to the stomach.


The signs and symptoms of esophagitis may include:

  • Heartburn
  • Difficult swallowing
  • Acid regurgitation
  • Painful swallowing
  • Swallowed food becoming stuck in the esophagus (food impaction)
  • Chest pain, particularly behind the breastbone, that occurs with eating
