History

The signs and symptoms of rheumatic fever are various. These signs and symptoms occur either alone or in combinations.

Sore throat
Many people seek no or incomplete treatments when they are have a sore throat. It is important to take the prescribed antibiotic, which can reduce the risk of developing acute rheumatic fever (ARF) by 80%.

Polyarthritis
Overall, in about 75% cases, arthritis occurs as the first attacks of ARF and the likelihood goes up as the age increases. It usually occurs in large joints like knees, ankles, and elbows. Over time, different joints may get inflamed at the same time.

Carditis
In 30-60% cases, carditis occurs of first attacks of ARF. It occurs both in children and adults, especially adults. Congestive heart failure can be triggered if it is severe. Other complications include breathlessness, cough, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea, chest pain, and/or orthopnea

Subcutaneous nodules
It is rarely noticed by the patients themselves.

Other symptoms
There are some other symptoms, including fever, abdominal pain, arthralgia, malaise, and epistaxis.
