What Are the Stages of Meningitis?

Q:
What are the stages of meningitis?

A:
There are three stages of the meningitis. They are infection, development of symptoms, and resolution by treatment or death.

The three stages often happen quickly.

  • Stage 1-2. Several days after you get infected, you start to have some symptoms. But in some cases where people got the disease by organisms that grow slowly, symptoms may appear a month after you caught meningitis.
  • Stage 2-3. Usually, if your disease isn’t severe, you get better within 48-72 hours after you received treatment. You may fully recover a couple of weeks later. But people with severe meningitis may suffer hearing and vision loss, permanent brain damage, and cognitive impairment.
