What are the treatments for diarrhea in infants?

When your baby’s diaper gets much looser or watery, and it occurs more often and in large amounts, he or she may get diarrhea. Then you must take it seriously.

The following are the common choices of treatments for diarrhea in infants:

  • For infection: bacterial -an antibiotic; a parasite infection -an anti-parasitic drug. We usually don’t recommend anti-diarrheal medicines for children.
  • For dehydration: an IV in their veins in hospital; an oral rehydration solution.
  • Switching solid foods to bland, starchy foods like strained bananas, applesauce, and rice cereal until the diarrhea stops. Mothers who are breastfeeding may also need to adjust their own diet.
  • Avoiding some food that can make it worse, including:
    • Greasy foods
    • Foods that are high in fiber
    • Dairy products such as milk and cheese
    • Sweets such as cake, cookies, and soda
  • Other tips: wash your hands with warm water and soap every time you change your baby’s diaper. Keep the diaper-changing area clean and disinfected.

Finally, remember treatments depend on the underlying causes. Before you try any remedies, you should call a doctor for diagnosis and advice.
