There are some factors that can cause legionnaires disease. In most cases, it’s caused by Legionella pneumophila, a type of bacterium.

How you get infected:

  • Inhaling water droplet that contains Legionella pneumophila. This can happen when you’re using a bathtub, swimming, walking past a fountain, or a mist machine at a grocery shop, using an air conditioner, among other things.
  • Touching contaminated soil. People who like to get their hands dirty at a garden are likely to get infected.

Risk factors:

  • Above the age of 50
  • A weak immune system
  • Suffering from a chronic lung disease
  • Smoking
