What Cause Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease?

Q: My son is 6 years old. He had a fever yesterday and was diagnosed with hand-foot-and-mouth disease this afternoon. Is it the fever that caused his disease? What are the causes of it?

A: Fever is not the cause of hand-foot-and-mouth disease. It is an early symptom of it. Another early symptom is sore throat. So it seems like a flu at the first stage of the illness.

In fact, HFMD and flu share a similarity. They are both caused by viruses. The viruses that cause HFMD are of the Picornaviridae family, in which the most common ones are coxsackievirus a16 and enterovirus 71. Other strains of coxsackievirus and enterovirus can lead to HFMD, too.
