What causes viral cardiomyopathy?

Viral cardiomyopathy is a condition which means the diseased cardiac muscle cells can’t function properly. When cardiomyopathy is attributed to a viral cause, it is referred to as viral cardiomyopathy.

The leading cause of viral cardipmyopathy is the infection of the walls of the heart by a virus called coxsackie virus B. This virus infects the cardiac muscles and the myocardial sac, thus resulting in the weakness of the cardiac muscles.

When coping with the demand of blood supply, the weak cardiac muscles get stressed, which in turn triggers the dilation of the chambers of the heart, then interferes with the cardiac pumping activity and leads to cardiac failure.
