What Is Age Spots Skin?

Q:
What is age spots skin?

A:
Liver spots and solar lentigines, commonly called age spots, are small dark areas on your skin. They usually appear on the faces, hands, arms, shoulders and other areas most exposed to the sun. People over 50 are prone to age spots, but younger people can get them too, especially if they spend a lot of time under the sun.

Age spots usually:

  • Are flat, oval areas of increased pigmentation
  • Are tan, brown or black
  • Range from freckle size to about 1/2 inch across and can group together

Age spots are caused by overactive pigment cells. Ultraviolet(UV) light can accelerate the production of age spots. To prevent age spots, you need to avoid the sun as much as possible, and use suncreen or cover up your skin whenver you are under the sun.
