What is atrophic gastritis?

Atrophic gastritis is also known as Type A or Type B Gastritis. It is a kind of chronic inflammation of the stomach mucous membrane.

The most common cause of atrophic gastritis is vitamin B12 deficiency. Other causes include H. pylori infection, certain foods, and immune system problems. People with the disease may experience nausea, vomiting, pain and indigestion.

It should be noticed that people suffering from autoimmune version of atrophic gastritis are more likely to develop other diseases including achlorhydria, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and gastric carcinoma.
