What is Burkitt lymphoma?

Burkitt lymphoma is a subtype of non Hodgkin lymphomas. In non Hodgkin lymphomas, cancer starts in a kind of immune cells called B-cells. Burkitt lymphoma is known ad the fastest growing tumor in human and is linked with impaired immunity. It can be treated with intensive chemotherapy which is beneficial to more than a half patients with Burkitt lymphoma. However, if left untreated, the disease can become quite fatal.

The incidence varies a lot all over the world. In Africa, it is common in young children with malaria and Epstein-Barr, accounting for 98% of all African cases. However, it is a rare disease outside Africa and most people who develop the disease are over 40.
