Chiari malformation is a kind of disease. Brain tissue of people with it extends into spinal canal. Part of skull presses on the brain and makes it downward. It is not common, but imaging tests are finding more people with it. There are three types of Chiari malformation.

Chiari malformation type I appears when the part in the skull containing part of the brain is too small or is deformed.

Chiari malformation type II is caused by a type of spina bifida named myelomeningocele.
