What Is Chronic Diverticulitis?

Q:
What is chronic diverticulitis?

A:
Chronic diverticulitis is the condition where patients may have repeated attacks of diverticulitis or may have a prolonged course of a single attack of diverticulitis. Chronic diverticulitis also refers to the complications that arise from repeated attacks of diverticulitis such as stricture and fistula.

In chronic diverticulitis, inflammation and infection may subside, but they may never clear up completely. The inflammation of diverticulitis can eventually result in a bowel obstruction, which may cause:

  • abdominal pain
  • abdominal swelling
  • bloating
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • thin stools

If the obstruction persists, abdominal pain and tenderness will increase and you may experience nausea and vomiting.
