What Is Costochondritis and What Causes It?

Q:
What is costochondritis and what causes it?

A:
Costochondritis is sometimes known as chest wall pain, costosternal syndrome or costosternal chondrodynia.

It is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone (sternum). Pain caused by costochondritis might mimic that of a heart attack or other heart conditions.

There isn’t one known cause of costochondritis. It’s often triggered by exercise or strain from coughing and can also be brought on by an infection from chest surgery or intravenous, or IV, drug use.
