What Is Hepatic Cyst?

What is hepatic cyst and its symptoms?

Liver cysts are one common forms of cysts and affect more than 5 percent of the world’s population. Fortunately, they are benign and don’t cause severe health complications as other cysts.

Liver cysts or hepatic cysts are round, thin sac-like structures in liver. They are usually scattered. Their sizes vary, ranging from 2 mm to more than 20 cm in diameter. However, most people have cysts of about 2 cm size. Hepatic cysts are more common amongst males and senior citizens. But, the chances of developing symptomatic cysts are higher in female patients.

Liver cysts usually cause no serious symptoms. Most people having them are unaware about their condition. Also, the benign sacs don’t affect the normal function of liver. When the cysts grow larger to about 7 cm, or if there is bleeding inside the cysts, then only they cause symptoms as follows:

  • Upper abdominal swelling and discomfort
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nauseated feeling
  • Eruption of the cysts
  • Digestive problems
  • Shoulder pain
  • Liver enlargement
  • Blockage of bile ducts
  • Infection of the bile ducts

If you have any symptoms that worry you, please contact your doctor immediately.
