What is hirschsprung disease?

A:
Hirschsprung disease is a disorder that affects one’s colon. The problem shows at birth. Babies with the disease have no nerve cells in their colon muscles.

The symptoms show after birth. However, they may not be obvious until the patient became an adult.

Symptoms include:

  • Inability to have a bowel movement within 48 hours after birth
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Swollen belly
  • Constipation
  • Gas
  • Fatigue

To treat the disease, the part of the colon that isn’t working needs to be removed.
