What Is IV-tPA?

Q: What is IV-tPA?

A: In order to understand IV-tPA, you need to understand tPA in the first place. First, tPA, short for tissue plasminogen activator, is a drug to help dissolve blood clots and make the blood flow after a stroke or heart attack. As for IV-tPA, it stands for intravenous tissue plasminogen activator. In other words, IV-tPA is the drug given via intravenous therapy; it goes through the vein. In addition, IV-tPA is the only drug that the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approves for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (restriction in blood supply).
