What is oral gonorrhea?

Oral gonorrhea, also called pharyngeal gonorrhea, is an STD (sexually transmitted disease) infection of the pharynx with Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

The infection can be acquired through direct contact with white or yellowish pus-like fluid containing N. gonorrhoeae bacteria from the sex partner.

People who perform fellatio are more likely to get oral gonorrhea than those who do cunnilingus.

The bacterial infection establishes itself in the pharynx and may be asymptomatic. Sore throat is the most common symptom of oral gonorrhea.

People with oral gonorrhea usually do not transmit the disease to others.
