What Is Red Tide Sickness?

Q:
What Is Red Tide Sickness?

A:
A “red tide” is a harmful algal bloom that occurs when toxic, microscopic algae in seawater proliferate to a higher-than-normal concentration. It often discolors the water to red, brown, green, or yellow. Red tides can kill fish, birds, and marine mammals and cause illness in humans.

People in coastal areas can experience varying degrees of eye, nose, and throat irritation. When a person leaves an area with a red tide, symptoms usually go away. People with severe or chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma or chronic lung disease would be better to avoid areas with active red tides.
