What Is the Definition of Bipolar Disorder?

Q:
What is the definition of bipolar disorder?

A:
Bipolar disorder is formerly called manic depression. It is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs and lows.

If you have the condition, you experience mood swings. When you’re depressed, you feel hopeless and sad. You lose interest in things that normally bring happiness to you. When you shift to the state of mania, you feel you’re full of energy or very irritable.

The real cause of bipolar disorder is unclear, but there are some theories:

  • Biological differences. It has been found that those who suffer the condition have physical changes in the brain.
  • Genetics. If your sibling or parent has the condition, you’re more likely to develop it as well.
