Rheumatic heart disease is a chronic heart condition caused by a signle severe or recurrent rheumatic fever. Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) features inflammatory lesions of the joints, heart, subcutaneous tissue, and central nervous system, which is caused by pharyngeal infection with group A streptococci. Based on the investigations of rheumatic fever occurring in the Australian aboriginal populations, it is estimated that streptococcal skin infections might also have something to do with the development of rheumatic fever. What’s more, in Oceania and Hawaii, although streptococcal strains are not thought to be typically related to rheumatic fever, it is found that it also can lead to the disease.
