What is the prognosis of clear cell renal cell carcinoma?

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC) is the most common subtype of renal cell carcinoma. However, patients with CCRCC are likely to have worse prognosis than those with other histologic subtypes. The multivariate analysis of CCRCC points out that significant independent predictors of poor prognosis include tumor size, nuclear grade, the stage of tumor, and the presence of histologic necrosis or sarcomatoid differentiation. Besides, based on recent data, prognostication may be improved with the help of mTor and hypoxia-induced pathways in CCRCC.
