What foods can help relieve my dysphagia?

If you have difficulty swallowing, try making a change in your diet. Some foods can help you feel better.

In fact, there are four levels of dysphagia diet, and each one has its own requirements.

  • Level 1
    Liquid foods and pureed foods are good for the patients. Besides, the foods should be homogenous.
  • Level 2
    In level 2, you can take some moist and soft foods that require little chewing ability. Some fruits and vegetables that can be mashed can also be added to the diet.
  • Level 3
    In this level, pieces of foods should be very small and they should be about the size of rice.
  • Level 4
    This level involves well-chopped foods, like chopped meat, omelets, soup, cream cheese, etc.

 

What foods should I avoid if I have dysphagia?

Foods that should be avoided also have four levels. Let’s take a brief look:

  • Level 1
    There should be no coarse textures, nuts, raw fruits or vegetables. Besides, prescribed drugs should also be liquid or crushed. Thin liquids can be unsafe.
  • Level 2
    There should still be no coarse textures, nuts, raw fruits, or vegetables. Water is not recommended.

  • Level 3
    Foods in this level should have no tough skins.  What’s more, nuts, dry or raw foods are still not allowed.
  • Level 4
    In this stage, there should be no nuts or foods that are raw, crisp or deep fried.

 

Are pureed foods in the recipes for dysphagia?

In people with severe dysphagia, it is next to impossible for them to eat any food that requires chewing ability. What’s more, they are also unable to drink thin liquids.

Therefore, pureed foods can take the place of common foods and help patients have a relative nutritious diet.
