What Treatments Are Used to Treat Advanced Kidney Cancer?

Q:

What treatments are advised to patients with advanced kidney cancer? Does chemotherapy work?

A:

Unlike other types of cancer, chemotherapy is usually less effective when it is used to treat kidney cancer. Therefore, patients are suggested that they should undergo other treatments. Among others, targeted therapies are usually the optimal choice if cancer cells have spread outside the kidney or the cancer cannot be removed by surgery.

There are other treatments suitable for patients, including surgery, immunotherapy and radiotherapy. Surgery is recommended to remove the kidney. Radiotherapy is used to shrink a tumor and relieve symptoms. Immunotherapy is used to enhance patients’ immune system, but it is rarely used because of its strong toxicity.
