What’s the Diet for Hypothyroidism?


My mom, 52 years old, has hypothyroidism. What diet should she take to improve her condition?

Antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables can not only benefit the thyroid gland, but also can improve overall health. Foods rich in antioxidants include tomatoes, blueberries, bell peppers etc.

Selenium is a necessary element for the enzymes which enable hormones produced by the thyroid to work properly. People with hypothyroidism should eat foods containing selenium, such as Brazil nuts and sunflower seeds.

Tyrosine is an amino acid used by the thyroid to produce T3 and T4. Meat, dairy, and legumes are all rich in tyrosine.
