Actually, there is no specific diet plan for lupus. But you need to pay attention to a heart-friendly diet, as there are links between heart disease and lupus. So good nutrition is an important part of an overall treatment plan for the disease.

In general, people with lupus should choose a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It should also include moderate amounts of meats, poultry, and oily fish.

Specifically, the following options can better improve your condition.

  • Change red meat to fatty fish. Red meat is full of saturated fat, which can contribute to heart disease.  Try to eat more, salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines.
  • Get more calcium-rich foods. These calcium-rich foods can strengthen your bones, such as low-fat milk, cheese, yogurt, tofu, beans, calcium-fortified plant milks, dark green leafy vegetables like spinach and broccoli.
  • Limit saturated and trans fats. Focus on foods that will fill you up without filling you out, such as raw vegetables, air-popped popcorn, and fruit.
  • Avoid alfalfa and garlic. These food can send your immune system into overactive and flare up your lupus symptoms.

  • Watch your alcohol intake. Alcohol can interact with some of the medicines such as methotrexate.
  • Limit salt intake. Too much salt can raise your blood pressure and increase your risk for heart disease.
