What's to Know About Meniere Disease?

Q:
What’s to know about meniere disease?

A:
Meniere disease is a condition that involves the inner ear. People who live with it occasionally have a spinning feeling. They lose their ability to hear every now and then and may one day lose it forever.

People of any age group can have meniere disease. But most patients are between 20 and 50.

Symptoms:

  • You become unable to hear anything for a while. The bad news is that most patients will suffer permanent hearing loss in the end.
  • You occasionally have a spinning feeling. It comes all of a sudden and lasts no more than 24 hours.
  • You sometimes experience buzzing, ringing or hissing in the affected ear.

Causes of the disease remain a mystery. One possible explanation is that the condition is caused by the abnormal amount of endolymph in the inner ear.
