Metastatic colorectal cancer often refers to the stage IV colorectal cancer,or is also known as advanced colorectal cancer.  At this stage, cancer cells have spread to other organs. Usually, the cancer cells may spread to the liver but sometimes it can also spread to the lungs and other parts of the body.

The prognosis for metastatic colorectal cancer is poor. According to National Cancer Institute, the five-year survival rate is only 12%. Besides, about 60-70% of patients will experience recurrence after surgery.

What is the treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer?

The common treatments for include:

  • Surgery
    Surgery aims to remove the cancerous lesion from the liver, the lungs or other parts of your body. Surgery is often combined with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The two therapies can shrink tumors so that surgery can remove them more easily.
  • Chemotherapy
    Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. The common drugs include:
    Capecitabine (Xeloda) and oxaliplatin (Eloxatin).
    5-FU, Oxaliplatin (Eloxatin), and Leucovorin.
    5-FU, Irinotecan (Camptosar), and Leucovorin.
  • Immunotherapy,
    Immunotherapy use drugs to help your immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. The drugs include:
    Pembrolizumab (Keytruda) .
    Nivolumab (Opdivo).
  • Targeted drug therapy
    Targeted drug therapy uses drugs to target specific malfunctions. The common target drugs include:
    Bevacizumab (Avastin)
    Cetuximab (Erbitux)
    Panitumumab (Vectibix)
    Ramucirumab (Cyramza)
    Regorafenib (Stivarga)
    Ziv-aflibercept (Zaltrap)

Generally, only one treatment option can’t treat metastatic colorectal cancer alone. Your doctor may combine these treatments to increase the success rate.
