Who Should Not Get PPSV23?

PPSV23 is the vaccine for pneumococcal pneumonia and it protects people from 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria. However, some people can’t get the vaccine.

  • People who have life-threating allergic reaction to PPSV should not get the dose
  • People who have severe allergic reaction to any component of PPSV should not get the dose
  • People who are moderately or severely ill when the shot is scheduled. But the vaccination can be done when recovered.
  • Children less than 2 years of age should not take the shot.
  • Pregnant women should not take the vaccine. There’s no proof that PPSV23 does harm to pregnant women or fetus but as precaution the vaccine is only used before pregnancy.
