Why Do People Work for Breast Cancer Awareness?

Q:

Why nowadays there are so many campaigns for breast cancer awareness?

A:

Breast cancer has become a major threat to women’s well-being all around the world. It is the most common type of non-skin cancer in women in the US. However, the cancer can also happen to men. Although the proportion is low, this group of people are generally overlooked. Therefore, in order to raise people’s awareness and knowledge to prevent and combat breast cancer, various campaigns have launched to promote the awareness of breast cancer, including Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Ride. What’s more, different things have been designed, such as shirts, socks, tattoos, and bracelets. Among others, the most prominent symbol of breast cancer awareness is the pink ribbon.

In an effort to raise awareness and prevent breast cancer, people are educated on the symptoms and treatment of breast cancer, and the importance of early screening, test and the like. In this way, activists expect that with greater knowledge, people will be more capable to detect breast cancer, which is quite helpful for earlier diagnosis, higher long-term survival rates.

Breast cancer awareness is an effort to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of breast cancer through education on symptoms and treatment. Supporters hope that greater knowledge will lead to earlier detection of breast cancer, which is associated with higher long-term survival rates, and that money raised for breast cancer will produce a reliable, permanent cure.
